Kathy Marshall has been designing bespoke kitchens, baths and interiors for over 25 years. Her extensive product and design knowledge have been accumulated by working on projects all over the globe. In the early '90s Kathy started a successful outerwear company, Mountain Ingenuity, where she designed and produced products for iconic brands such as Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, and L.L. Bean. Always a student of design and architecture Kathy and her father, Ed MacDonald, started a very successful Kitchen and Bath design firm on the South Shore of Boston, MA.

Known for a timeless style that’s layered, comfortable, and creative, she brings a lifelong passion for craftsmanship, millwork, textiles, and global influences to every project. A discerning eye for detail and depth of knowledge of renovation earned her a recurring role over a ten-year span on America’s most trusted home improvement television show, This Old House.

Today, her expertise gives our clients easy access to excellence in space planning, millwork, and custom furniture outcomes. We also offer renovation consulting and management, and top tier project management to our remarkable clientele around new England, across the country, and overseas.

Creating Casual Elegance at Apple Trees

Two separate referrals brought this special project to Kathy Marshall Design in the autumn of 2021. An American couple relocating from London was in town looking at properties that might become their new year-round residence in scenic Manchester-by-the-Sea. A leading candidate was the stately Colonial Revival built in 1896 known locally as Apple Trees. One of forty such houses built as “summer cottages” from Industrial Age wealth, the home is known for its formal gardens and soaring nineteen-foot Corinthian columns flanking the front entry.

The Kitchen Refresh

Under the right circumstances, a kitchen refresh can be the perfect solution if you’re looking to revive a tired kitchen. As opposed to a kitchen remodel where virtually everything is replaced and reconfigured, a refresh generally leaves flow and function in place to focus on improving aesthetics and style instead. We’ve done a ton of them over the last 25 years, and I’d love to share one of my recent favorites, and what made it a good candidate for a refresh, in hopes of helping you evaluate your own potential projects.
